Asia Society of New York, China File series
Anson and Martin briefed attendees on the current concerns as Hong Kong people are poised to finally achieve full universal suffrage for the election of the Chief Executive in 2017 and all members of LegCo in 2020, including fear that central government bent on controlling the process of nominating candidates for the post of CE and therefore giving HK people no choice.
In following Q&A session attendees expressed particular concern on:
· Maintenance of the rule of law and continuing independence of the Judiciary
· Erosion of press freedom, particularly creeping self-censorship and attacks on journalists
· Importance of overseas countries with stakes in HK continuing to support faithful implementation of the JD, especially UK as co-signatory of the JD
· Power of the SCNPC (rather than HK courts) to interpret the Basic Law and potentially veto outcome of current consultation on implementation of universal suffrage if not to their liking.
