Mrs Chan and Mr Lee will take the opportunity of these meetings and engagements to provide an update on the current situation in Hong Kong in the wake of the recent elections to the Legislative Council. They will highlight the concern felt, in particular by young people, at the ever increasing interference by China’s Central Government authorities in Hong Kong affairs, and the progressive erosion of rights and freedoms that should be guaranteed to Hong Kong people under ‘one country, two systems’. They will underline the many longstanding economic and cultural ties between Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand and why what happens in Hong Kong should continue to matter to the rest of the world.
